Routine vaccinations are recommended (Hepatitis A, B, Typhoid). Yellow Fever vaccination may be required if arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. Malaria is present in some areas; consult your doctor for antimalarial medication. Traveler's diarrhea is common; practice good food and water hygiene. Ensure comprehensive travel insurance with medical evacuation coverage.
Generally safe, but petty crime (theft from vehicles, pickpocketing) is common, especially in tourist areas and cities like San José. Be aware of your surroundings, avoid walking alone at night, and do not leave valuables unattended. Use official taxis. Avoid venturing off marked trails in national parks.
Valid passport required (valid for at least one day from entry for Group 1 visa-exempt nationals, including US citizens; 3 months for Group 2). Most US and European citizens do not require a visa for stays up to 90 days. Onward/return ticket and proof of sufficient funds (approx. $300 USD) may be requested. An exit fee of $39.25 USD is usually included in airfare.
